Jamie Harnwell

NSL Career: Perth Glory 146 (19) / 1998/99 - 2003/04

A tall and powerful centre-back who was commanding in defence and provided a goal scoring threat from set pieces, Harnwell was an integral part of the Perth Glory machine that finished minor premiers three times and competed in four grand finals in five seasons.

Following in the footsteps of his father Derek, Harnwell started his junior career with Western Australian club Sorrento and progressed to the first team at 18 years of age. Harnwell played in the Western Australian Premier League, with stints at Sorrento and Olympic Kingsway, before getting signed by the NSL's first Western Australian club Perth Glory as a 21 year old.

Adapting to the standard of top flight football at a mature age, Harnwell made just nine starts out of 19 league appearances in the lead up to the finals series, with the central defensive positions contested by New Zealand internationals Danny Hay and Gavin Wilkinson, Italian import Gianfranco Circati and local product Craig Deans.

Harnwell started in all four of Perth's finals series matches and scored his first goal for the club in the second leg of their elimination final victory over Adelaide City. Harnwell became Perth's first choice centre-back during the 1999/00 season and scored three goals as Peth finished minor premiers for the first time.

Perth progressed to the grand final in which Harnwell scored a header to give Perth a three-nil half-time lead. Wollongong miraculously got back on level terms and took the game to a penalty shoot-out decider where Harnwell converted Perth's second penalty, but it was not enough as Wollongong won the shoot-out seven-six.

Following the 1999/00 season, Harnwell had an unsuccessful trial with English First Division side Stockport before being joined at Perth by younger brother Todd. Harnwell took his game to another level in the 2000/01 season, tightening Perth's defence with central defensive partner Ljubo Milicevic to give the club it's best defensive record since joining the league and scored a personal best six league goals.

South African-English coach Mich d'Avray replaced German coach Bernd Stange for the 2001/02 season and coached the side to one of the best seasons by a club in NSL history - losing just one game during the season and vastly improving the club's defensive structure in which Harnwell played a major role.

Perth finished minor premiers and reached the grand final for the second time in three seasons, losing one-nil to Sydney Olympic. Perth continued to perform during the 2002/03 season, finishing second in the regular season with another strong goal difference (conceded just 22 goals) before finishing top of the new Championship Series (10-round finals series format).

Perth went in to their third grand final in four seasons against second-placed Sydney Olympic in which Harnwell scored a powerful header from a Simon Colosimo cross to open the scoring in Perth's two-nil victory. Following his third NSL Grand Final, Harnwell had another crack at Europe, accepting a short-term contract with English Third Division side Leyton Orient. Harnwell made just one league appearance for Orient and turned out for non-League side Welling United before returning to Perth during the final season of the NSL.

Harnwell worked his way back in to the team and became a key player in their finals series campaign, scoring in the first leg of their major semi-final loss to Parramatta Power before playing in Perth's back-to-back grand final victory over Parramatta. Following the conclusion of the NSL, Harnwell briefly returned to Sorrento in the WA Premier League. Glory became an A-League foundation club for the inaugural 2005/06 season and Harnwell was given captaincy upon his return to the club.

Harnwell captained the club for two seasons and played on for a further four, during which time he helped the club qualify for the final series for the first time in the A-League era and spent some time as a centre-forward, finishing as the club's top scorer in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.

During the 2007/08 season, Harnwell was loaned to Liechtenstein club Vaduz ,who competed in the Swiss Challenge League, and helped the side win the league and gain promotion to the Swiss Super League. Harnwell played in the side's Liechtenstein Cup Final win against FC Balzers before returning to Perth. At the end of the 2010/11 A-League season, Harnwell retired from the top flight as Perth's all-time appearances holder and returned to Sorrento, where he helped the side win the 2012 WA Premier League Championship before hanging up his boots at the age of 36.

Following his playing career, Harnwell went on to coach at state and national league level in mens and womens football respectively before holding key administrative roles in Western Australia's governing body for football, Football West. Harnwell was selected as a centre-back in Glory's 15th Anniversary Team
