League Formats and Club Profiles
NSL Brief
> The National Soccer League competition ran for 28 seasons between 1977 and 2004
> The naming rights of the NSL were changed several times during the course of it's existence under the following league sponsors: Philips, Olympic Airways, West End, Quit, Coca-Cola and Ericsson
> Four of the first 11 seasons of the NSL (1977, 1981, 1983, 1987) were decided by first-past-the-post
> Prior to the NSL Finals Series format, which is still used in the A-League, the NSL ran a post-season Play-Off Series which was contested between the top four (five in 1987) teams
> The Play-Off Series ran for five seasons: 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1987
> The Play-Off Series did not decide the championship and the competitions' statistics did not count as official NSL statistics
> The NSL Finals Series was introduced in the 1984 season and was used to decide every championship besides the 1987 season
> The NSL Cup ran for 21 seasons between 1977 and 1996
> The naming rights of the NSL Cup were changed several times during the course of it's existence under the following league sponsors: Philips, Nanda, Beach Fashions, Quit, Coca-Cola and Johnnie Walker
> Between 1984 and 1986, the NSL was split in to two conferences: the Northern Conference which included clubs from New South Wales and ACT and the Southern Conference which included clubs from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia
> As Australia were members of the Oceania Football Confederation prior to 2006, NSL clubs were part of qualification for the Oceania Club Championship tournaments in 1987, 1999 and 2001 - as well as the Oceania Cup Winners' Cup in 1987
